ALL-YEAR-round swimming is a passion for Galwegians, but there are even more who never set foot in the sea, even on the hottest days - a fact made all the stranger given Galway is a coastal city.

The Galway Arts Festival returns from Monday July 16 to Sunday 29 and will be officially launched in Dublin this evening and in Galway tomorrow. Below is all that is on during the two weeks and there is plenty to look forward to.

IMPRESSIONS IS the title of an exhibition by GMIT printmaking students which opens at the Quadrangle Gallery, NUI Galway, this Saturday at 7pm.

The collapse of Communism and its legacy for Eastern Europe and the implosion of the Irish economy and its ramifications for our State are two major themes which will be explored in this year’s TULCA festival.

THE TULCA Festival of Visual Arts 2011 kicks off on Friday next November 4. The festival will examine aspects of the recent fall-out in Ireland and internationally, by addressing artist responses to political, social, and economic collapse. Entitled ‘After the fall’ it will also consider re-imaginings of the future in the wake of these collapses. A range of well-known Irish artists will feature in this year’s programme, many of these artists engage with contentious issues in post-Celtic Tiger Ireland. Tulca runs until November 20 in galleries across Galway.

THE AWARD winning Galway artist Jennifer Cunningham will run a series of one day art workshops on Saturdays and Sundays in May running from May 7 to 21.

TULCA, GALWAY’S Festival of Visual Arts 2010, returns from November 6 to 21 and will present work by more than 40 national and international artists across eight venues and public spaces in Galway city.
